The culture of death reaches deeply into the hearts of our neighbors. Perhaps you have seen the effects of the spiritual emptiness and despair which drives people toward acts like abortion, euthanasia, and suicide.
You belong to this mission because you know that the solution is not merely to inform people about what's wrong with the world. Healing comes when we inspire people with what's right, and good, and beautiful. That's what it means to be pro-life.
The quotation above came from a school teacher who contacted us recently about her struggle to help a suicidal child. It is disturbing to hear stories like hers, where the materialism and egoism of our culture manipulates young people into following a Pied Piper of false happiness, darkness, and death.
This teacher's story was so moving that I decided to let you read extended excerpts for yourself, so that you can see how your contribution makes a difference in the lives of real people:
Dear Camille: Thank you for all the great work you do in promoting the Life Principles and Father Spitzer's book, Healing the Culture. Ever since I heard your talks, I have kept the principles in my mind, and teach it whenever I can.
As a teacher, I sometimes observe adults and students, even at the primary grades, who are struggling to find happiness and looking in all the wrong places.
This year, I had a bright student who was highly competitive. He often put other children down to build himself up, and he was having difficulty developing friendships because of this. Whenever he was not perfect or the best, it devastated him, and I could tell he was headed for trouble. He never smiled. His parents confided in me that he had recently told them he did not want to be alive.
I prayed about it, and then remembered your booklet: Life Quest: A Guidebook to Happiness. I wrote some goals for him to work on involving the Life Principles.
With strong support from his parents, the student made a quick turnaround. I noticed that at first he was being more helpful only because he had been asked. But later, I noted that he was beginning to sincerely gain pleasure from helping and complementing others. He smiles now, he doesn't compare himself or put others down, and he is no longer trying to be perfect.
Practicing the Life Principles has enabled me to help others view life in a healthier perspective. If I had had a booklet outlining these principles like Life Quest: A Guidebook to Happiness when I was a teenager or college student, it would have made life a lot easier for me. I had to figure out some of the truths by trial and error, but it's never too late to learn! (A.M., Washington)
We are always thrilled to hear about real ways in which our work is having a profound and life-giving effect on people. We hope that by passing these experiences on to you, it will fill you up with the same excitement about being part of a mission with tangible results.
This year, we are working hard to extend our ministry across the United States and Canada. (See our Calendar of activities online at: www.healingtheculture.com.)
Since last year's international conference, we have developed two affiliated partner organizations in Canada which now sponsor their own Life Principles speaker training events. Twelve speakers were trained last weekend, and we'll be helping to conduct another training this month. We are already planning our second international conference to be held in Seattle next year, to build even more affiliates across the United States.
Last year, one of our affiliates delivered over 389 Life Principles presentations to students at 73 schools! Our combined affiliates reached over 25,000 people through personal presentations. Having proper resources is essential to their success.
One of our best resources for high school talks is our booklet, Life Quest: A Guidebook to Happiness. Our speakers love being able to give this booklet to audiences at the end of a talk. We've received letters, phone calls, and stories from all over the world about how much it has helped people to see the real dignity and goodness of human life.
This month we will earmark your contribution for stocking our affiliates and their speakers with this powerful tool. Your gift of $25, $50, $100, $250 or more will help put this resource into the hands of thousands of people who need it the most. Please send your donation right away. Thank you for your generosity and commitment for life!
